Indonesia Upgrades Digital Access on Northernmost Miangas Island with Starlink

In a significant move to bridge the digital divide, the Indonesian government has initiated a crucial upgrade of digital access on Miangas Island, a strategically vital location in the nation's northernmost border region. This initiative, spearheaded by President Prabowo Subianto during his recent visit, involves the deployment of advanced Starlink internet services, mobile phones, and signal boosters. The primary objective is to enhance connectivity, streamline public services, and stimulate economic activity for the island's 203 families.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, in collaboration with state-owned telecommunications firm Telkomsel, is overseeing the distribution of essential equipment. Each family is slated to receive a Starlink device and a mobile phone, with 180 Starlink modems and 210 mobile phones already prepared and en route. This logistical undertaking, involving multiple flights from Jakarta to Manado and further coordination for transport to Miangas, highlights the government's commitment to ensuring these remote communities are not left behind.

Beyond the provision of devices, the program includes substantial improvements to signal quality through the installation of additional base transceiver station (BTS) equipment. This comprehensive approach is expected to empower residents with easier communication, better access to public services, enhanced educational opportunities, and faster information dissemination.
