Indonesian Lawmakers Await President's Nominee for Central Bank Governor

Commission XI of the Indonesian House of Representatives is awaiting President Prabowo Subianto's nomination for the next Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI). The commission has not yet received the assignment to conduct the necessary fit-and-proper test for the candidate, as stipulated by law.

Another Deputy Chairman, Mohamad Hekal, emphasized the importance of maintaining the rupiah's exchange rate stability during this leadership transition. He stressed the need to preserve market confidence in the central bank's performance. Hekal expressed confidence in the appointment of Destry Damayanti, the Senior Deputy Governor, as the acting Governor, believing she can uphold the market's trust.

The appointment of Mrs. Destry as interim Governor of Bank Indonesia is in accordance with the BI Law, and I am confident that she is capable of carrying out this task and assuring all industry players that BI can carry out its duties properly.

Perry Warjiyo voluntarily resigned from his position as Governor of BI on Monday morning for personal reasons. Following his resignation, BI's Board of Governors appointed Destry Damayanti as the interim Governor, in accordance with Article 50, paragraph (2) of the Bank Indonesia Law. Destry confirmed that the government has not yet submitted a recommendation for Perry Warjiyo's replacement, explaining that the process for filling the Governor's position is outlined in the Bank Indonesia Law, starting with the nomination of qualified candidates by the president and requiring DPR approval.
