Despite a fragile ceasefire, the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has once again plunged southern Lebanon into a state of crisis, with recent Israeli airstrikes proving to be among the most intense in three weeks. The National News Agency of Lebanon (NNA) reported a series of devastating strikes, particularly in the town of Saksakieh, where initial reports indicate seven people, including a young girl, were killed and 15 injured. This violence shatters any illusion of peace and underscores the deep-seated animosity that persists along the border.

The Israeli military claims to have targeted Hezbollah operatives in a building used for military purposes, acknowledging reports of civilian casualties and stating the circumstances are under investigation. However, the accounts from the Lebanese Ministry of Health paint a harrowing picture of indiscriminate attacks, including a strike on a motorcycle in Nabatieh that killed a Syrian man and his 12-year-old daughter, who was reportedly killed on the second strike after surviving the first. Further south, in Bedias, another strike resulted in one death and injuries to thirteen people, including children and women.

The Israeli military’s assertion of acting against planned attacks, while also warning residents of certain villages to evacuate, adds another layer of complexity. However, the sheer scale of civilian casualties reported by Lebanese authorities raises serious questions about proportionality and the protection of non-combatants, a narrative that often gets lost in the broader international discourse.
