Jakarta Governor visits family of man who died amid unrest

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung offered condolences to the family of Bambang Setiawan, a 59-year-old mirror seller who died following unrest in the Pejompongan area of Central Jakarta. Setiawan reportedly died after clashes that occurred on Thursday night.

During his visit, Governor Anung conveyed the grief of the Jakarta Provincial Government and assured the family that the administration would cover all costs associated with Setiawan's funeral arrangements and burial. Setiawan had reportedly left his home when the unrest spread from the vicinity of the DPR building to Jalan Pejompongan Raya on Thursday night. However, the exact cause of his death remains unconfirmed and is currently under police investigation. Chico Hakim stated that the provincial government would respect the ongoing legal process and urged residents to refrain from spreading speculation.

Police had requested an autopsy to determine the cause of death, but the family refused and submitted a written statement of refusal. Kabid Humas Polda Metro Jaya Kombes Pol Budi Hermanto confirmed the police's request and the family's rejection, emphasizing the need for an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death. The incident began when police received information about ongoing unrest in the area, and officers waited for the situation to stabilize before conducting an evacuation.
