Jakarta Sets Rp8 Trial Fare for Kelapa Gading-Manggarai LRT

Jakarta’s Kelapa Gading-Manggarai LRT will run trial services for just Rp8 per passenger, a promotional fare Governor Pramono Anung linked to the spirit of Indonesia’s Independence Day on Aug. 17.

“Until the President officially inaugurates the line, we have decided to run the trial with a fare of Rp8 per passenger on this LRT service. Why Rp8? It is a continuation of the August 17 spirit,” Pramono told reporters after an anniversary event for Jakarta’s Public Order Agency at Taman Ismail Marzuki.

The governor did not disclose when the trial would begin. He said his administration remained in close coordination with the State Palace over the official inauguration by President Prabowo Subianto. Pramono said he did not want to announce details before the president’s inauguration day.

He expects the line eventually to handle between 70,000 and 80,000 passengers each day. Services are planned to run from 5 a.m. until midnight, matching the schedule of commuter rail, or KRL. Pramono said he hoped the new route would help reduce traffic congestion in the capital.

Ahead of the trial and launch, Pramono instructed the City Parks and Forestry Agency to clear and green the space beneath the elevated structure. The agency has already begun clearing the area, and the governor said he hoped the greening work would be completed soon.

The operating hours match the commuter rail schedule. That is what sets it apart from other transit modes in Jakarta. And I hope this will help ease urban traffic congestion.
