Jakarta Waste Facility Processes Up to 2 Tons of Trash Daily

Jakarta is tackling its significant waste problem through localized processing facilities, with the TPS 3R Tanah Sereal serving as a key example. This facility processes between 1 and 2 tons of inorganic waste each day, primarily sourced from residents of the Tanah Sereal sub-district.

The initiative is crucial for managing the massive amount of waste generated by the capital city, which produces approximately 9,000 tons of trash daily. By processing waste at this local level, the aim is to significantly reduce the volume sent to the main TPST Bantargebang landfill.

Beyond simply reducing the load on the central landfill, the presence of these 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) waste processing centers encourages residents to sort their waste at the source. This promotes a more sustainable waste management system and helps in recovering materials with value before they become residual waste.

While Jakarta has around 31 such TPS 3R facilities, their optimal utilization remains a challenge. The success of TPS 3R Tanah Sereal highlights the potential of these decentralized units in building a more sustainable and environmentally conscious approach to waste management in the city.
