Joe K.A.S's Didactic Theater Offers Social Commentary and Educates Children

In the realm of arts and culture, every creator has unique objectives and intentions. For Joe K.A.S, a prominent theater figure in Kedah, Malaysia, theater is a responsibility. His aim is to deliver beneficial and educational messages through his writing and direction.

Joe K.A.S, whose real name is Mohd. Zulkamal Ismail, is dedicated to revitalizing theater, particularly in northern Malaysia. Alongside members of the Alor Setar Theater Association (PENTAS), he encourages audiences to think critically and make informed decisions based on the plays presented. He has also staged children's plays, including 'Suara Rimba' (2015), 'Kota Kuching' (2016), 'Payung' (2022), and 'Pulau Kuching' (2024).

For his children's productions, Joe K.A.S conducts field research, observing children's behavior to ensure authenticity. "Children's theater needs simpler settings, minimal props, and concise dialogue to suit their age and comprehension levels," he stated. Recently, he received the Kedah State Theater Practitioner Award 2025 and staged his play 'Janji Presiden' at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). This play, a continuation of 'Mimpi Presiden' and 'Dongeng Presiden,' was a resounding success, attracting students, staff, and theater enthusiasts from across the region.

'Janji Presiden' delves into the desires of the citizens of the Kozambo region for new leadership. The unseen President promises to resign if peace is achieved. The play, infused with didactic elements and social commentary, features singing, cynical, and humorous dialogue, captivating the audience. Joe K.A.S hinted at a potential fourth installment in the series.
