Lyricist Explains Controversial Song 'Teringin,' Denies Obscenity

Veteran lyricist Lukhman S, known for crafting enduring songs, recently addressed the controversy surrounding the hit song 'Teringin,' which he penned for singer Shima. The song faced accusations of obscenity, a misinterpretation Lukhman worked to correct.

At that time, I was attacked for allegedly producing obscene lyrics. I immediately contacted the newspaper's editor and asked to meet the journalist. We finally met while eating rojak on Jalan Maarof. I explained the real meaning of the song.

Lukhman explained that 'Teringin' actually tells the story of a divorced couple who wish to reconcile, a theme that was relatively uncommon in songs at the time. He acknowledged that the word 'teringin' (meaning 'to long for' or 'to desire') could be misconstrued if taken out of context, but stressed that its intended meaning was far from inappropriate. He recounted meeting with the journalist who misinterpreted the lyrics to clarify his artistic intent.

The song is about people who are divorced and want to get back together. At that time, the issue of divorce was still considered something quite foreign and rarely highlighted in songs. The word 'teringin' itself, if misinterpreted, can indeed sound obscene, whereas the actual meaning is not like that at all.

He also shared the genesis of 'Purnama Merindu,' a popular song by Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza. Lukhman stated that the lyrics were inspired by his observations of societal tendencies to judge individuals based on their wealth, status, and fame, rather than their character. The song reflects a deep philosophy about life and human nature.
