Johnny Depp Surprises Comic Con as Ebenezer Scrooge

Johnny Depp delighted fans at San Diego Comic Con on Thursday with a surprise appearance, embodying Ebenezer Scrooge to promote his upcoming film, "Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol."

The 63-year-old actor arrived in full Victorian attire, complete with heavy gray facial hair and aging makeup, outside a pop-up store named "Scrooge and Marley." He stayed in character, engaging with the crowd and playfully bantering with attendees dressed as his iconic past roles, including Captain Jack Sparrow and the Mad Hatter.

Later, Depp made his way into the convention center and appeared during Collider's "Directors on Directing" panel in Hall H. Holding a candle, he addressed the audience, asking, "Have you all no lives?" before tossing candy to the crowd as an eerie voice repeated Scrooge's name over the speakers. Paramount Pictures released the film's first trailer shortly after his appearance.

"Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol," scheduled for a November 13 theatrical release, is a gothic reimagining of Charles Dickens' classic novella. Directed by Ti West, the film depicts Scrooge's supernatural journey through 19th-century London. This project signifies Depp's return to major Hollywood studio productions after a period marked by legal disputes and significant off-screen publicity.

Depp has previously expressed a deep personal connection to the story, calling it a privilege and stating he has been "obsessed with" Scrooge's tale since childhood. The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Tramell Tillman, Ian McKellen, Sam Claflin, and Daisy Ridley. Ian McKellen, who plays Jacob Marley, praised Depp's performance, describing him as "in spankingly good form. Effervescent, funny, irreverent, serious, all at the same time.
