Keiko Fujimori inaugurated as Peru's president amid divided Congress

Keiko Fujimori officially assumed the presidency of Peru on Tuesday, beginning her 2026-2031 term in a ceremony at the Congress. This marks the ninth presidential transition in Peru over the past decade.

Fujimori, the political heir of former president Alberto Fujimori, entered the legislative chamber to applause from her supporters, while left-wing lawmakers displayed images of victims of state violence and repression following the ouster of former president Pedro Castillo.

The inauguration was attended by ten heads of state and government, including King Felipe VI of Spain, and the presidents of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Fujimori's family, including her daughters and siblings, were also present, alongside newly elected senators, deputies, and political, military, and religious authorities.

Following the presidential sash ceremony and oath, Fujimori is expected to outline her government's key policies and initial measures in her first address as head of state. She had previously announced that Luis Galarreta would serve as prime minister, Elmer Cuba as minister of economy and finance, and Carlos Espá as minister of foreign relations. Fujimori secured the presidency on her fourth attempt, winning the July 3 runoff election by a narrow margin of less than 50,000 votes against left-wing candidate Roberto Sánchez.
