Kenitra prosecutor opens inquiry into MP’s claims about drug money influencing elections

A prosecutor in Kenitra has opened a judicial inquiry into remarks by Mostafa El Ibrahimi, a lawmaker and Justice and Development Party candidate in the district, about the possible use of drug money to influence Morocco’s upcoming legislative elections.

The prosecutor general at the Kenitra Court of Appeal said the investigation followed the circulation of the comments on social media. Its purpose is to verify the circumstances and context in which the statements were made, according to an official notice.

During a party meeting, El Ibrahimi warned of what he described as a danger to elected institutions. He said proceeds from drugs could potentially be used to affect the electoral process and referred to 270 tonnes of drugs while discussing campaign financing.

The public prosecution said the inquiry would establish the appropriate legal consequences within its powers and responsibilities. It also stressed its commitment to applying the law and safeguarding the integrity of the coming elections as preparations continue.
