King Felipe VI to Attend Inauguration of Costa Rica's President-Elect Laura Fernández

Madrid – His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain is set to travel to Costa Rica to attend the official inauguration ceremony of President-elect Laura Fernández Delgado. The ceremony, scheduled for May 8, represents a significant diplomatic engagement, underscoring the close relationship between Spain and the Central American nation.

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the King's presence at the event serves to "reinforce the bonds of closeness and affinity that unite the Spanish and Costa Rican peoples." Furthermore, it conveys Spain's readiness to continue enhancing bilateral relations within the framework of the Ibero-American Community of Nations, a community both countries actively participate in.

Laura Fernández, a 39-year-old political scientist representing the right-wing Partido Pueblo Soberano, secured a decisive victory in the presidential elections held on February 1. Her inauguration marks a new chapter for Costa Rica, and Spain's high-level representation signals its support for the incoming administration and its commitment to fostering strong diplomatic and economic ties.

This trip adds to King Felipe VI's busy schedule of attending state inaugurations in 2026. He previously participated in the investiture of Portugal's new president, António José Seguro, in Lisbon on March 9, and subsequently traveled to Santiago, Chile, on March 11, for the inauguration of José Antonio Kast. During his visit to Chile, the King held meetings with both the president-elect and the outgoing president, Gabriel Boric, before attending the Presidential Transfer of Command ceremony.
