Korean Couple's 'Dokdo Cafe' in Philippines Recognized as 'Dokdo Hero'

In the picturesque tourist destination of Panglao, Bohol, Philippines, a unique establishment is quietly making waves for Korean national pride: the "Dokdo Cafe." Operated by a dedicated Korean couple, Uhm Sang-hyun and Park Jin-hwa, this cafe has become the third recognized "Dokdo Hero" in an ongoing initiative by Professor Seo Kyoung-duk of Sungshin Women's University.

The "Go! Dokdo Hero" project, a collaboration with the Dokdo Love Movement Headquarters, seeks to spotlight individuals and organizations worldwide who champion the cause of Dokdo, a territory central to Korean identity. The project documents their efforts through video, bringing their stories to a wider audience. The first two heroes recognized were students from the University of Minnesota's Dokdo club and a Canadian man who has maintained an English-language Dokdo website for 19 years.

Professor Seo, along with Korean traditional painter Seo Jun-beom, recently visited the "Dokdo Cafe" to present the couple with a plaque and donate materials, including a large Dokdo-themed painting for the cafe's interior. This initiative not only celebrates the couple's dedication but also serves as a powerful, grassroots effort to disseminate information about Dokdo internationally. The cafe, now in its fourth year of operation, has faced its share of challenges, but the couple's commitment remains unwavering.

Professor Seo emphasized the crucial role these "hidden heroes" play in raising global awareness about Dokdo. He plans to release an interview video detailing the couple's motivations, experiences, and the significance of their work. This project underscores a growing trend of overseas Koreans and international supporters actively engaging in cultural and territorial advocacy, demonstrating that the spirit of promoting Korean heritage extends far beyond its borders.
