KTX-SRT Integrated Train Service to Launch Next Month at SRT Fare Level

South Korea is set to enhance its high-speed rail network with a pilot program integrating KTX and SRT trains, allowing them to operate as a single unit. This innovative 'coupled operation' aims to significantly boost seating capacity without increasing the number of train services, a move that benefits passengers by offering more travel options.

The pilot program, commencing August 15, will initially focus on key routes: the Honam line between Suseo and Gwangju Songjeong on weekends, and the Gyeongbu line connecting Busan and Pohang to Seoul on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This strategic deployment targets high-demand corridors, ensuring the benefits of increased capacity are felt by a wider range of travelers.

Passengers can look forward to fares aligned with SRT prices, which are approximately 10% lower than KTX fares, making high-speed travel more accessible. While this integration offers cost savings, it's important to note that KTX mileage points will not be earned on these combined services. This initiative is part of a broader effort to streamline the nation's rail infrastructure, with full integration of high-speed rail services anticipated by September.

Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Kim Hyun-mee emphasized the government's commitment to accelerating this integration, stating, "We will pursue the integration of high-speed rail more swiftly by September so that the public can experience benefits such as expanded seating capacity more quickly."
