Lampung Governor Supports Crackdown on Narcotics and Illegal Firearms

Lampung Governor Rahmat Mirzani Djausal has voiced strong support for the eradication of illegal narcotics and firearms, attending a public destruction ceremony organized by the Lampung Regional Police. The event underscored the authorities' commitment to safeguarding the younger generation from the pervasive threat of drug-related crime.

During the ceremony, Lampung Police Chief Inspector General Helfi Assegaf detailed the region's vulnerability to drug trafficking due to its strategic position as a gateway between Sumatra and Java islands. "This situation cannot be allowed to continue. The Lampung Police are fully committed to supporting the President of the Republic of Indonesia's Asta Cita program, especially in strengthening legal reform and eradicating narcotics," Assegaf stated. He emphasized that drugs are a shared enemy that damages the future of the nation's youth and must not be given any space.

The destruction included substantial quantities of confiscated substances: 119.1 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, 58.2 kilograms of marijuana, 35,166 ecstasy pills, 19,996 'happy five' pills, and various other forms of narcotics, with an estimated economic value of around 264.979 billion Indonesian rupiah (approximately $16 million USD).

Authorities estimate that the destroyed narcotics could have potentially harmed 829,264 lives. In addition to drugs, the police also seized 166 illegal homemade firearms and 114 rounds of ammunition, comprising 147 handguns and 19 long guns. Inspector General Assegaf noted a growing public awareness, evidenced by the voluntary surrender of these weapons, which he praised as a crucial contribution to maintaining security and order in Lampung.
