Latvia and Scandinavia: Illegal Cigarette Ring Investigated, Five Face Charges

Latvian tax and customs police have concluded an investigation into an organized group accused of distributing illegal cigarettes across Latvia and Scandinavian nations. The probe, initiated last May, uncovered a group storing large quantities of tobacco products in a warehouse in Riga's Jugla district.

During multiple raids on the warehouse, residences, and vehicles, authorities seized 3,845,000 illegal tobacco items. These included Marlboro, Marlboro Gold, and Winston cigarettes, some bearing Belarusian excise stamps. Investigators determined the cigarettes were packaged for distribution, with courier services playing a role in their illicit trade.

Through international law enforcement cooperation, including communication with the Finnish Customs Service regarding suspicious courier shipments, Latvian police received confirmation that packages contained cigarettes marked with Belarusian excise stamps. Based on the evidence gathered, the case was handed over to the Tax and Customs Affairs Prosecutor's Office on July 27. Prosecutors are now requested to initiate criminal proceedings against five individuals for large-scale illegal tobacco product circulation within an organized group. If convicted, they face up to five years in prison.
