Latvia Bought Anti-Drone Systems But 'Forgot' Ammunition, Official Says

Latvia acquired anti-drone systems without purchasing the corresponding ammunition, a procurement oversight that has come to light. The statement, made by an official identified as Kulbergs, confirmed the existence of such a situation, though specific details about the procurement, system, or responsible institution were withheld.

When questioned whether this oversight occurred during the term of former Defense Minister Andris Sprūds, Kulbergs declined to provide a direct answer. "We bought the equipment, we forgot to buy the ammunition," Kulbergs stated, adding that this situation had indeed occurred. He did not name the specific procurement, system, or institution accountable for the failure to acquire the necessary munitions.

Kulbergs indicated that not all details regarding drone incidents and defense capabilities could be disclosed at this time, as the matter is still under review. He also expressed concern that despite Latvia's self-proclaimed status as a "drone superpower," the underlying substance is lacking.

Currently, Latvia is working on establishing a unified system to synchronize the actions of its border guard and the Ministry of Defense. This initiative aims to enhance airspace monitoring and counter-drone capabilities, drawing on experiences from Ukraine to effectively manage drone threats and reduce reliance on costly missile systems. Sprūds served as defense minister from September 2023 to May 2026.
