Left-wing lawmakers walk out of Peru's Congress before Fujimori's inaugural address

Left-wing lawmakers in Peru staged a dramatic protest on Tuesday, walking out of Congress moments before President Keiko Fujimori delivered her inaugural address. The group, dressed in black, shouted "Justice for the victims" as they left the chamber.

Their protest was a somber remembrance of those who died during protests against the government and in massacres under the previous administration of Alberto Fujimori, the new president's father. Many lawmakers wore black armbands and carried photos of victims. Alberto Fujimori is serving a 25-year sentence for crimes against humanity and corruption.

Ernesto Zunini, secretary general of the Juntos por el Perú party, explained the boycott. He stated that his party would not be silent witnesses to a government that does not represent a new beginning but a continuation of a model that has damaged democracy and protected those responsible for the people's suffering. He emphasized that their presence would not legitimize those who prioritize personal interests over Peru's well-being.

The departing lawmakers asserted their action was in respect for the victims and a demonstration of their unwavering commitment to justice, democracy, and national dignity. They aim to avoid legitimizing a government they believe perpetuates a harmful system.
