Lima Faces Winter Heatwave with Temperatures Soaring to 28°C

Lima is set to experience a significant heatwave, with temperatures expected to climb as high as 28°C from Sunday, August 23rd, through Tuesday, August 25th. The Servicio Nacional de Meteorología e Hidrología del Perú (Senamhi) has warned of moderate to strong heat intensity, exceeding typical August averages.

Districts farther from the coast, including La Molina, Ate, Santa Anita, and San Juan de Lurigancho, are predicted to register the highest temperatures, peaking around 28°C in the afternoon. Coastal areas will see slightly cooler highs, around 26°C, though morning fogs and drizzles characteristic of winter will persist.

Senamhi attributes this unusual warmth to the persistence of warm waters off the Peruvian coast, linked to El Niño Costero conditions. The influx of northern winds further contributes to clearer skies and increased solar radiation across Lima and the central coast.

Despite the elevated temperatures, residents are reminded that winter conditions like morning fog will continue. Senamhi also cautioned about high ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels, advising prolonged sun avoidance between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and recommending protective measures such as sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-protective eyewear.
