Lima offers rescued pets for adoption after saving them from illegal trade

The Metropolitan Huáscar Club, managed by Lima's Park Service (SERPAR), is providing a second chance for approximately 250 dogs and cats rescued from illegal pet trade. Located in Villa El Salvador, the adoption center has been instrumental in finding permanent homes for these animals since its establishment in November 2024.

The center actively receives animals recovered during inspection operations, offering them necessary care, including food, shelter, and veterinary attention, until they can be adopted. The program also focuses on promoting responsible pet ownership through workshops, talks, and awareness campaigns for the public. Recently, 12 puppies rescued from street operations were brought to the center, undergoing thorough health evaluations before becoming available for adoption.

Individuals interested in adopting must meet specific criteria to ensure the animals' well-being. Requirements include being over 18 years old, presenting identification, proof of address (utility bill), criminal and police background checks, and the last three pay stubs to demonstrate financial capacity. Adopters also sign a responsibility agreement, committing to provide adequate living conditions for their new pet. Post-adoption support is available through social-cost veterinary clinics, allowing for follow-up on the animals' adaptation and welfare.
