Lost Pan Am Plane Wreckage Found Off Puerto Rico Coast

After decades of searching, researchers have located the wreckage of the Pan Am "Clipper Endeavor," a plane that disappeared off the coast of Puerto Rico. The discovery marks the end of a long quest to find the aircraft, which crashed on April 11, 1952, shortly after departing for New York.

The "Clipper Endeavor" experienced multiple engine failures shortly after takeoff, forcing the pilot into an emergency landing at sea. While initial reports suggest survivors of the impact, chaos ensued due to a lack of safety briefings, a significant language barrier, and no coordinated evacuation plan. The plane sank in less than three minutes, leading to the deaths of 52 people.

This tragic event, which claimed 52 lives with 12 passengers and 5 crew members rescued, served as a grim catalyst for major changes in aviation safety. Mandatory pre-flight safety briefings were introduced as a direct consequence, fundamentally altering modern air travel.

Russ Matthews, president of the Air/Sea Heritage Foundation, spearheaded the search for the plane since 2019 after encountering its story during research for another crash. He expressed a mix of awe and humility upon the discovery, noting how a story of such significance had largely faded from public memory. The foundation, along with Warner Bros. Discovery, was instrumental in the search, which successfully utilized high-resolution sonar to pinpoint the aircraft's location on June 2.
