Major Clash in Central Jakarta Over Nasi Uduk Dispute Leaves One Dead

A violent clash between two groups in Central Jakarta's Pegangsaan sub-district has left one person dead and another in critical condition. The large-scale brawl occurred on Sunday morning in the Jalan Tambak area, prompting a significant police response.

According to the Head of Criminal Investigation for the Central Jakarta Metro Police, AKBP Roby Heri Saputra, the incident began around 10:00 AM. Initial investigations suggest the conflict stemmed from a dispute at a breakfast stall. One group allegedly became dissatisfied with the service, leading to an argument. They reportedly left the scene but returned shortly after with reinforcements, damaging the nasi uduk (a type of rice dish) vendor's cart.

This act of property damage then triggered a retaliatory attack from residents in the area against the group's location, escalating the situation into a widespread brawl. Police officers attempted to intervene and halt the violence, but the large number of participants meant the conflict continued, resulting in casualties and damaged property, including a fire.

Two victims were evacuated to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM). One succumbed to their injuries during medical treatment, while the other remains in critical condition. Police have detained eight individuals at the scene for questioning and are working to determine their identities and legal status in the area. Investigations are ongoing to fully understand the sequence of events and the motivations behind the deadly conflict.
