Makinde says govt policies tackling workers’ hardship, insecurity

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has articulated a clear vision for enhancing the welfare of state workers, emphasizing that his administration's policies are directly addressing the twin challenges of insecurity and poverty. Speaking at the 2026 May Day celebration, Makinde underscored the detrimental impact of these issues on productivity and morale, asserting that a secure environment is paramount for a productive workforce.

The governor detailed proactive steps taken by his government, notably the strengthening of the Amotekun Security Network, a community-based initiative aimed at complementing national security efforts. Beyond this, Makinde highlighted consistent logistical support provided to conventional security agencies, fostering improved inter-agency coordination for better intelligence sharing and rapid response. This multi-pronged approach aims to create a safer Oyo State, which he believes is intrinsically linked to economic productivity.

Beyond this, we have consistently supported security agencies with logistics, patrol vehicles, communication equipment, and other logistics.

Makinde also pointed to tangible measures implemented to support workers' welfare. These include the regular and prompt payment of salaries and pensions, the implementation of the national minimum wage, and the clearing of inherited promotion arrears. The recent introduction of a N10,000 monthly transport bonus further demonstrates the government's commitment to alleviating the financial burdens faced by civil servants.

Makinde further cited improved inter-agency coordination among the Police, Amotekun, the Armed Forces, and other services, saying it has boosted intelligence sharing and rapid response.

While acknowledging the challenges, Governor Makinde urged workers to remain committed, disciplined, and innovative, while also rejecting corruption. He stressed the importance of collective effort in building a conducive work environment. The governor's address reflects a government actively engaged in policy-making that seeks to balance security, economic stability, and the well-being of its workforce, positioning Oyo State as a model for responsive governance.
