Workers’ Day: Labour talks aiding development in Edo, says Okpebholo

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has emphasized the crucial role of constructive dialogue with workers in driving his administration's development agenda. Speaking at the 2026 Workers' Day celebration, Okpebholo underscored that prioritizing workers' welfare has been a cornerstone of his tenure since assuming office. He proudly announced an increase in the state's minimum wage to ₦75,000, the consistent payment of the 13th-month salary, and the assurance of prompt salary disbursements.

From teachers to health workers, civil servants, artisans, traders and security personnel, you are the backbone of Edo’s progress.

The governor lauded the state's workforce, from teachers and health workers to civil servants and artisans, recognizing them as the 'backbone of Edo’s progress.' He extended particular appreciation to labor leaders for fostering a cordial relationship with the government, stating that their 'constructive engagement' has been instrumental in allowing the administration to concentrate on developmental projects. This collaborative spirit, he suggested, is vital for the state's forward momentum.

Okpebholo also detailed significant investments in key sectors. The state government has allocated substantial funds for salary arrears at Ambrose Alli University and outstanding gratuities for retired local government pensioners. Furthermore, his administration has overseen the employment of over 10,000 individuals across various sectors, including education, healthcare, and local security. The governor also pointed to ongoing infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing mobility and market access, alongside proactive security measures that have reportedly reduced cult-related killings. He attributed these successes, in part, to the broader economic reforms championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the 'Renewed Hope Agenda.'
