Malaysia seizes container, refuses to be trade route for Israel

Malaysia has taken a firm stance against facilitating trade with Israel, demonstrated by the seizure of a shipping container at Tanjung Pelepas Port in Johor. The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) confiscated the container on Friday after receiving intelligence about its cargo. Initial checks indicated the shipment violated Malaysian customs regulations prohibiting direct or indirect exports to Israel.

AKPS is currently investigating the container's contents, including its type, specifications, intended use, and classification. The agency is also determining if the goods fall under the Strategic Trade Act, which regulates the export of strategic materials. AKPS stated that any attempt to export goods to Israel, directly or indirectly, would be met with strict enforcement.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praised the AKPS for its swift action, emphasizing that the seizure reinforces Malaysia's policy to prevent its territory from being used for trade that could support Israel. He reiterated that Malaysia will not serve as an intermediary for trade that aids Israel's actions against the Palestinian people. This move aligns with Malaysia's commitment to international principles and its existing government restrictions imposed since December 2023.
