Man Dies After Alleged Beating Over Theft Accusation

A 30-year-old man has died at his home in Dhamrai, Bangladesh, following a severe beating he sustained a week prior. Shankar Mondal was allegedly attacked on August 8 at a local rice mill after being accused of stealing a motor component. His family states he was beaten inside the mill after being called there with his father.

According to police, Shankar was taken to the Dhamrai Upazila Health Complex in critical condition. Doctors recommended transferring him to a hospital in Dhaka for further treatment, but his family was unable to afford the costs. Inspector Mohammad Shahidul Islam of Dhamrai Police Station confirmed that an inquest was conducted following Mondal's death.

Police reported that the individuals accused of assaulting Shankar Mondal have reportedly gone into hiding. An officer stated that legal action will proceed if the family files a formal complaint. The incident highlights concerns about vigilantism and access to adequate medical care.
