Man with Dementia Dies After Spirit Airlines Allegedly Fails to Provide Assistance

A tragic incident has unfolded in Texas, where a 75-year-old man with dementia, Marcos Humberto Videl Osorio, lost his life after being struck by multiple vehicles on a highway. Osorio had arrived at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport on a Spirit Airlines flight from Honduras on June 8, 2024.

The family alleges that they had informed Spirit Airlines in advance about Osorio's dementia and his need for assistance navigating the airport post-arrival. According to the lawsuit, a Spirit employee reportedly confirmed that assistance would be provided. However, the family claims that no support was offered to the disoriented elderly passenger after his flight landed.

Hours later, Osorio's body was discovered on the Eastex Freeway, miles from the airport, indicating he had wandered off alone. His family, devastated by the loss, has filed a federal lawsuit against Spirit Airlines. They contend that the airline breached its duty of care and violated the Air Carrier Access Act, which mandates assistance for passengers with disabilities, including cognitive impairments.
