Massive Fire in Caraș-Severin: 20 Hectares of Pasture and Forest Ablaze; Firefighters Supported by Locals and Black Hawk Helicopter

A significant wildfire has broken out in Caraș-Severin County, Romania, engulfing an estimated 20 hectares of valuable pastureland and forest. The blaze, which ignited on May 1st, has prompted a large-scale response involving dozens of firefighters, local residents, and crucial aerial support from a Black Hawk helicopter. The challenging terrain and the presence of multiple, rapidly spreading fire fronts make this a particularly difficult operation for emergency services.

Initial efforts began with a single team from the Caransebeș Firefighting Detachment, but the scale of the fire quickly necessitated a broader mobilization. By Saturday morning, over 45 military firefighters from Caransebeș, Reșița, and Oravița were deployed, equipped with specialized tools to combat vegetation fires. Their efforts on the ground are being augmented by 3-4 local volunteers, demonstrating a community-wide commitment to tackling the disaster.

The Inspectorate General for Emergency Situations (IGSU) highlighted the complexities of the operation, noting the difficult accessibility of the area and the significant smoke emissions hindering the intervention. The deployment of the Black Hawk helicopter, equipped with a Bambi Bucket system for water drops, represents a critical component of the strategy to contain the fire. This coordinated approach, combining ground and air resources, is essential in the ongoing battle against the flames, the evolution of which remains dynamic and dependent on weather conditions and the intensity of the remaining hotspots.
