Massive oil spill drifts toward Oman coast, risking major environmental disaster

A vast oil slick originating from a leaking tanker is drifting towards the coast of Oman, prompting warnings from environmental authorities about the potential for one of the world's worst oil disasters in years. The spill has been spreading for weeks with virtually no containment measures, significantly increasing the environmental risk. Environmental officials in Oman have stated that the oil slick could impact a 40-kilometer stretch of coastline near Ras Madrakah and the island of Masirah. Satellite imagery analyzed by specialists indicates the oil slick now covers an area exceeding 2,000 square kilometers. The source of the spill is the tanker Caroline Bezengi, which was carrying Russian oil and is subject to international sanctions. The vessel ran aground on June 30. Maritime sources reported an apparent explosion on board the ship on June 8, after which it first signaled problems off the coast of Yemen. While no group has claimed responsibility for any potential attack, the tanker was traveling from Russia to India, traversing areas affected by two wars. Its journey began in April from the Russian port of Novorossiysk in the Black Sea, a region central to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
