Massive wildfire engulfs pristine forest in Greece, firefighters battle extreme conditions

A colossal wildfire is tearing through Boeotia, Greece, devouring forest and farmland and posing a grave threat to local communities. Fueled by gale-force winds descending from Mounts Helicon and Kithairon, the inferno rapidly developed multiple fronts, surging towards Kalamaki, Xyronomi, and Porto Germeno, creating an exceptionally challenging firefighting scenario.

As the fire penetrates the dense, pristine forest, standard fire hoses struggle to reach the uncontrolled blazes. In response, elite forest commando units (EMODE) are deployed. These firefighters advance on foot through rugged terrain and ravines inaccessible to vehicles, battling the flames meter by meter in choking smoke and towering infernos to establish defensive lines and halt the fire's advance before it reaches populated areas.

The most critical situations are unfolding in Xyronomi, Kalamaki, Agios Vasileios, and Porto Germeno, where constant flare-ups and powerful wind gusts continuously alter the fire's behavior. The operation involves 215 firefighters, 10 commando teams, volunteers, and 57 fire engines, supported by water tankers, heavy machinery, and the DEUCALION team, which is working with the Forestry Service to create firebreaks.

Meanwhile, in the area between Domvrena and Agios Nikolaos, the situation has seen a relative improvement due to weakening winds, allowing fire crews to contain the intensity of that front. The fire is being held approximately 800 meters from Agios Nikolaos, with flames moving towards already burned areas, reducing the immediate risk to homes. This improvement followed preemptive 112 alerts and the evacuation of Agios Nikolaos and Alykes.

However, Agios Vasileios remains in a critical state, with the fire cutting off the only road access and trapping residents and tourists. Despite 112 warnings, many refused to leave their homes, prompting a large-scale sea rescue operation. Fire Service, Coast Guard, and private vessels are safely transporting hundreds of people to Livadostra. The greatest concern now shifts to Porto Germeno, where the flames are spreading rapidly.
