May Day Tragedy: Several Kwara Health Workers Die in Auto Crash, Others Injured

A somber mood has enveloped Kwara State following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of several members of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN). The union members were returning from the May Day celebrations in Ilorin when the vehicle they were traveling in crashed on the Oke-Onigbin–Omu-Aran road. This devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the perils faced by workers, even as they celebrate the dignity of labor.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that a burst tyre led to the driver losing control of the vehicle, resulting in the fatal crash. The Executive Chairman of Ekiti Local Government Council, Hon. Awelewa Olawale Gabriel, expressed deep sorrow, describing the event as a "painful blow" to the council, the health sector, and the state. He lamented the loss of dedicated professionals who met their unfortunate end while returning from a day meant to honor their contributions.

Our hearts are heavy. These were dedicated professionals who left their homes to celebrate the dignity of labour, only to meet this unfortunate fate on their way back. We have lost patriots who served our communities with compassion and commitment.

In solidarity, the Kwara State chapter of MHWUN has declared a three-day mourning period, with the union’s flag to be flown at half-mast. The local government has pledged to collaborate with state authorities to support the bereaved families and assist with the medical expenses of the injured. This tragedy casts a dark shadow over Nigeria's commemoration of its workers, highlighting the vulnerability of citizens and the importance of road safety, especially for those serving the community.
