Meloni's Government Becomes Second Longest-Lived in Italian Republic History

The government led by Giorgia Meloni has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the second-longest serving administration in the eighty-year history of the Italian Republic. Meloni herself marked the occasion not as a personal triumph, but as a profound responsibility towards the Italian people. She pledged to press forward with resolve, guided by the mandate received from citizens and a singular focus on the national interest.

Since taking office in October 2022 as Italy's first female Prime Minister, Meloni, heading a coalition of right-wing parties including the League and Forza Italia, has navigated a path of relative internal calm. This longevity is remarkable in a nation known for its political volatility, having seen 68 governments rise and fall prematurely since the end of World War II. Her current administration has now surpassed 1,288 days, trailing only Silvio Berlusconi's second government (2001-2005) which lasted 1,412 days.

While the government has enjoyed a period of unusual internal tranquility, it has not been without its setbacks. Notable challenges have included the failure of a proposed judicial reform and the resignations of prominent figures like the Minister of Tourism and the Minister of Culture. Nevertheless, Meloni's government is now focused on completing its term, expected to conclude in the summer of 2027, with the continued support of its right-wing coalition partners.
