Messi Sets Leagues Cup Scoring Record in Miami's 4-2 Victory

Lionel Messi etched his name further into the record books on Wednesday, scoring twice to become the all-time leading scorer in the Leagues Cup. His performance guided Inter Miami to a decisive 4-2 victory over Atletico San Luis in their opening match of the 2026 tournament group stage.

The Argentine superstar, who joined the Florida club last year and led them to the 2023 title in his initial weeks, reached a new milestone. With his two goals against San Luis, Messi has now amassed a record 14 goals in the competition, which features clubs from Major League Soccer (MLS) and Mexico's Liga MX.

Inter Miami's path to victory saw David Rodriguez initially give San Luis the lead in the fourth minute. However, Messi quickly responded with an equalizer just seven minutes later. Venezuelan midfielder Telasco Segovia then put Miami ahead in the 26th minute. Messi struck again just before halftime, and Brazilian defender Micael extended the lead to 4-1 deep into first-half stoppage time. Atletico managed a consolation goal in the second half through Rafa Llorente.
