MGM U18 Rugby Team Advances to Semifinals After Upset Win

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School's Under 18 rugby team is heading to the Weetbix Raluve semifinals after a decisive quarterfinal win against Jasper Williams High School. The MGM side triumphed over the defending champions last weekend in Tavua.

One of the key players in MGM's victory was inside center Vasiti Va’acegu. The 16-year-old, who has maternal links to Ra and hails from Papua New Guinea, demonstrated an immense work ethic and made a valuable contribution to her team's success. She credits her father for his guidance.

Va’acegu acknowledged the upcoming semifinal presents a new challenge. "We believe is going to get tougher, although we may have defeated the champs, they were one of our giants because that’s how we viewed them and most of us are young but we believe the Lord will do it and I believe he will again," she stated, expressing faith in her team's ability to overcome further obstacles.

Va’acegu is expected to be a player to watch in the semifinals, alongside sprint champion Lydia Waqairapoa, who scored the winning try in the quarterfinals. MGM is scheduled to play Adi Cakobau School in the semifinal match at HFC Stadium in Suva on Saturday at 1:40 p.m. The game will be available for live viewing on VITI+.
