Montevideo Mayor Summoned Over Fatal Street Race Incident

Montevideo's Departmental Council has unanimously called Mayor Mario Bergara to provide a detailed report on the city's efforts to combat illegal street racing. The urgent summons comes after a tragic incident in Parque Rodó where a 12-year-old child died and several others were injured during clandestine races.

Council members want Bergara to explain the prevention, inspection, and control operations carried out by the Intendancy of Montevideo. They also seek clarity on the coordination between the city and the Ministry of the Interior to curb these illegal activities. Specific questions will address the operations planned for July 24, the night of the fatal incident, including the human and material resources allocated and measures to prevent future occurrences.

In response to the growing problem, the Departmental Council recently approved a new decree. This regulation significantly increases the impoundment period for vehicles involved in street races to 90 days. Previously, owners could retrieve their vehicles after just three days, often by making a down payment on any outstanding debts. The new rules eliminate payment plans for retrieving impounded vehicles, aiming to make enforcement more effective. Mobility Director Germán Benítez stated that this change prevents seized motorcycles from reappearing on the streets within 72 hours and highlighted improved coordination with the police.
