Moose rescue operation in Žiežmariai: the animal resisted calls to climb out of the water

A dramatic rescue operation unfolded in Žiežmariai today as authorities attempted to extricate a moose that had become trapped in a local pond. When trying to approach the animal by boat, the moose did not yield to calls to climb ashore.

Kaunas Fire and Rescue Service personnel were deployed to the scene, employing a boat to approach the distressed animal. Despite repeated attempts to guide the moose towards the shore, the large creature remained stubbornly in the water. Even a powerful water jet from a fire hose, typically an effective deterrent or guiding tool, failed to persuade the animal to leave its watery refuge. This resistance underscored the moose's distress and the difficulty of forcing a wild animal to act against its instincts.

Recognizing the potential for further harm and increased stress to the animal, the decision was made to temporarily suspend the operation. This pragmatic approach, prioritizing the animal's welfare, is a hallmark of responsible wildlife management. A representative from the Wild Animal Care Center, a veterinarian, remained on site, along with police officers, to monitor the situation.
