Munition Discovery Causes Panic in Istanbul Street During Gas Work

A routine natural gas excavation in Istanbul's Eyüpsultan district took a dramatic turn yesterday when workers unearthed what is believed to be an artillery shell. The discovery, made in Akşemsettin Mahallesi's 1 Güven Sokak, immediately raised concerns and prompted a swift response from local authorities.

İGDAŞ crews, engaged in excavation work, stumbled upon the buried object, which they suspected to be explosive. They promptly alerted the police, who quickly cordoned off the area to ensure public safety. Following a thorough examination by law enforcement, the munition, identified as likely a mortar shell, was secured and taken into protective custody.

Mahalle resident Çetin Uzun recounted the incident, stating that the object was found buried underground during the natural gas work. He mentioned that the team suspected it was explosive and alerted the authorities. Uzun added that the shell appeared to be very old, possibly dating back around 100 years. "Perhaps a disaster was averted," he remarked, highlighting the potential danger posed by the unearthed munition.
