Museveni promotes 301 UPDF officers

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, has approved the promotion of 301 officers within the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). The promotions, announced by acting UPDF spokesperson Col. Chris Magezi, include the advancement of six Brigadier Generals to the rank of Major General.

Among those promoted to Major General are Brig. Gen. Godwin Karugaba, Brig. Gen. Chris Musinguzi Bagonza, Brig. Gen. Michael Nyarwa, Brig. Gen. Richard Karemire, Brig. Gen. David Robert Gonyi, and acting Maj. Gen. Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga. Additionally, 83 officers serving in acting capacities have been confirmed in their substantive ranks, and 89 Second Lieutenants have had their probationary ranks confirmed as Lieutenants.

Col. Magezi stated that these promotions and confirmations are crucial for reinforcing leadership at all echelons of the UPDF. He emphasized that the changes ensure continuity in the force's constitutional mandate to protect Uganda's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The UPDF views these advancements as integral to enhancing both leadership and operational effectiveness within the military.

The promotions are also a key component of the UPDF Establishment 2021, a strategic initiative representing a significant evolution for Uganda's armed forces. Since 2024, the UPDF has been implementing substantial modifications to its command offices, aligning various functions and designations with this updated framework. This process requires officers in key command positions to hold ranks commensurate with their roles, leading to the formal promotions for those previously serving in acting capacities.
