New Machinery to Boost Fiji's Farm Road Development

The commissioning of new heavy machinery at the Lakena Agriculture Station marks a significant step forward in the Fijian government's commitment to supporting its agricultural sector. This investment, part of the 2024–2025 Farm Mechanisation Program, underscores the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways' dedication to enhancing the capabilities of farmers across the nation. By providing modern equipment, the government aims to directly address the critical needs of farm road development and land preparation, which are essential for boosting agricultural productivity and farmer incomes.

The machinery was commissioned under the 2024–2025 Farm Mechanisation Program.

Minister Tomasi Tunabuna highlighted the pressing demand for these services, noting that the Ministry has already received 75 farm road requests totaling over six million dollars. The new fleet, valued at $1.2 million, is not merely an upgrade but a necessary expansion of operational capacity to meet this demand. The inclusion of graders, wheel loaders, a bulldozer, and a low-bed truck will enable the Ministry to construct and maintain farm roads more effectively, opening up access to remote agricultural lands and facilitating the transport of produce.
