New Ogun NANS leadership vows to end injustice

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Committee in Ogun State has ushered in a new era with the election of Olabode Faruq as its chairman. This transition, hailed by stakeholders as a testament to a transparent and credible electoral process, signals a renewed commitment to student advocacy and representation within the state's tertiary institutions. Faruq's victory, secured with a decisive seven out of thirteen votes, is viewed as a mandate for progress and a collective call for purposeful leadership.

Upon assuming office, Chairman Faruq articulated a clear vision centered on unity, accountability, and a student-centric agenda. His inaugural address resonated with a promise to combat injustice and uphold the dignity of students across Ogun State. "Under my watch, no student will be subjected to injustice, no matter how small. We will stand firm, speak boldly, and act decisively in the defence of student rights and dignity," Faruq declared, setting a firm tone for his tenure. This commitment underscores the critical role NANS plays in safeguarding student welfare and ensuring their voices are heard.

The electoral convention, which brought together representatives from thirteen tertiary institutions, was lauded for its adherence to democratic ideals. Faruq extended his commendation to the National President of NANS, Olushola Oladoja, and the Southwest Zonal Coordinator, Adeyemi Kayode, for their support of democratic principles within the movement. The Independent Convention Planning Committee, led by Akinbodunse Praise, also received praise for orchestrating a fair and transparent process, reinforcing the strength of democratic culture within the student body.

It is with a deep sense of concern that I address the unfortunate incident involving an attack on Comrade Adeyemi Azeez. On behalf of the entire NANS Ogun JCC leadership, I extend sincere sympathy and strongly condemn this act of violence and lawlessness. Such behaviour has no place in our movement.

While celebrating the successful transition, the new leadership did not shy away from addressing emerging challenges. Faruq condemned a post-election attack on the Special Assistant to the Governor on Students’ Matters, Adeyemi Azeez, characterizing it as an act of violence and lawlessness that has no place in their movement. He also noted reports of alleged unprofessional conduct by some security operatives during the convention, pledging to engage the appropriate authorities for a thorough investigation. This dual focus on internal democratic processes and external security concerns highlights the complex landscape in which student leadership operates in Nigeria.
