New Taipei City Expands Policy Allowing Large Motorcycles in Street-Side Paid Parking Zones

New Taipei City is continuing its initiative to integrate large displacement motorcycles into street-side paid parking zones, a move that began with pilot programs and is now expanding to more districts.

Starting May 1, residents in Zhonghe, Yonghe, Tucheng, and Tamsui will see large motorcycles permitted to park in the same street-side paid motorcycle spots previously reserved for smaller scooters. This policy, which began in March and has been observed to accommodate nearly a thousand large motorcycles, aims to optimize the use of limited urban parking resources. The fee structure remains consistent with dedicated large motorcycle parking spots, charging NT$30 per four-hour interval.

To enhance the efficiency of roadside parking space utilization, New Taipei City has gradually expanded the measure of allowing large displacement motorcycles to park in roadside paid motorcycle spots since March. After observing the usage of nearly a thousand large motorcycles, the policy will be further expanded to include roadside paid motorcycle spots in four administrative districts: Zhonghe, Yonghe, Tucheng, and Tamsui, starting May 1.

To address potential concerns from regular scooter users about being squeezed out, the New Taipei City Department of Transportation stated that they have simultaneously increased the number of regular roadside motorcycle parking spaces in these newly included districts. Over the past six months, 1,048 new motorcycle parking spots have been added. The department also emphasized that large motorcycles must park within the designated lines, with provisions for longer vehicles to occupy two spaces if necessary, ensuring order and fairness in parking.

While promoting the large motorcycle parking policy, the city government also takes into account the parking rights of general motorcycle users. In the four districts including Zhonghe, more than 1,048 roadside motorcycle parking spaces have been added successively in the past six months to reduce the impact of the policy promotion on existing parking demands.
