New Visitor Center to Highlight Environmental and Cultural Heritage in Xochimilco

In a significant move to bolster environmental awareness and conservation efforts, Mexico's Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Sedema) has unveiled plans for the creation of a pioneering Visitor Center within the Ejidos de Xochimilco and San Gregorio Atlapulco Protected Natural Area. This initiative, set to unfold over the remainder of the year, will transform the existing Museo Chinampaxóchitl into a vibrant center dedicated to environmental education and orientation, solidifying Xochimilco's role as a crucial ecological zone for Mexico City.

The new center's museographic proposal is designed to offer visitors a comprehensive understanding of Xochimilco's profound environmental, historical, and cultural value. Through engaging thematic displays, the narrative will trace the history of the Valley of Mexico's water systems and the formation of its ancient lake system, emphasizing how the current landscape is a living testament to a natural history vital for the capital's ecological balance. A central focus will be placed on revalorizing the traditional chinampa agricultural system, highlighting its sustainable practices and its enduring importance.

Through different thematic axes, the history of the Valley of Mexico Basin and the way water shaped the ancient lake system will be told. This tour will allow us to recognize that the current landscape is the vestige of a natural history that remains alive and is fundamental to the ecological balance of the City.

Furthermore, the Visitor Center will illuminate critical environmental services that Xochimilco provides, such as aquifer recharge, climate regulation, and carbon capture – essential contributions to the overall health of the metropolitan area. An area will be dedicated to emblematic species like the Mexican axolotl, aiming to foster a deeper appreciation among visitors for the local flora and fauna. Sedema's commitment through this project underscores the importance of preserving the rich biodiversity that sustains this unique protected ecosystem, ensuring its ecological integrity for future generations and reinforcing its status as a natural heritage site.
