No Racist Motive in Vaasa Corrosive Liquid Assault on 8-Year-Old, Police Say

Finnish police have largely concluded their investigation into a suspected aggravated assault in Vaasa, where a corrosive substance was poured on an 8-year-old child in a schoolyard. The incident, which occurred at Variska School, is not being treated as racially motivated, according to investigators.

The altercation began when the 8-year-old, along with other children, was throwing stones at a group of girls. No injuries were reported from this initial stone-throwing. However, the situation escalated when two teenage boys, aged 16 and 15, who were with the girls, approached the younger children to stop the behavior.

During the ensuing scuffle, the 8-year-old gained possession of a bottle containing a drain cleaner. While the teenagers attempted to retrieve the bottle, the child splashed some of the liquid onto the 15-year-old boy's face and clothing. Police are investigating this action as assault.

Subsequently, the 16-year-old boy took control of the bottle and poured its contents onto the 8-year-old child. This act is being investigated as aggravated assault. The incident concluded with the involved parties leaving the scene separately. The 15-year-old did not require medical attention, and police have not detailed the severity of the 8-year-old's injuries.

Investigators examined surveillance footage and other evidence, finding a cohesive account of the events. Crucially, the possibility of a racist motive was explored but dismissed, with police stating there were no indications of such intent. Separately, surveillance footage also captured teenagers detonating homemade devices in the schoolyard on the same Sunday. Police are investigating three separate cases of careless handling related to these devices and are seeking information from the public.
