NRM Takes Unity Message to Villages Ahead of Lc I, Women Council Elections

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has initiated a nationwide mobilization campaign focused on reinforcing internal unity and consolidating grassroots support ahead of the upcoming Village Women Council and Local Council I (LC I) elections. Senior NRM Secretariat officials have been engaging in sub-regional meetings across various parts of the country, including Acholi, West Nile, and Karamoja, to strategize and garner support for NRM-endorsed candidates.

Every village consists of households, and within the NRM, LC I chairpersons serve as household leaders for the party. They form the bridge between the population and leadership, reaching communities even where the President cannot personally go.

A central theme emphasized during these engagements is the critical importance of party unity, with leaders stressing that the NRM's strength originates at the village level. Success in the grassroots elections, they argue, hinges on cohesion among party members. NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong highlighted the role of LC I chairpersons as the foundational leadership for the party, serving as essential conduits between communities and national leadership.

Todwong noted that the NRM has already identified candidates in most villages and is now focused on ensuring their electoral success. However, he expressed concern over reports of party members allegedly backing independent candidates against official NRM nominees, warning against actions that undermine party cohesion. The Secretariat has also reported overcoming previous financial challenges, clearing outstanding debts and allocating Shs11 billion from expression of interest fees towards constructing permanent district party offices. Plans are also in motion to establish regional centers and a new national headquarters to decentralize party operations. In the Greater Masaka region, NRM Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja echoed the call for unity, cautioning against internal divisions.
