NU social programs provide aid, free meals and glasses to Quran teachers

Nahdlatul Ulama’s congress in Jombang became a base for direct assistance to people living near the event site. NU Care-Lazisnu PBNU organized aid for orphans and disadvantaged families, free lunches and eye services for Quran teachers during two days of activities.

What is most important is that we do not forget to continue showing solidarity and concern for humanitarian issues. NU is an organization whose main purpose is to serve the public, especially those who need it most.

The organization distributed assistance and scholarships to 500 children around Tambakberas Islamic boarding school. Teachers and local NU networks recommended the recipients, a process intended to ensure that help reached people considered most in need.

Muhammad Ali, a 12-year-old sixth-grade student from the area, said he planned to use the assistance to prepare for secondary school. He said it would help him buy a bag, clothes and other school supplies before entering an Islamic junior high school.

We received recommendations from teachers and NU colleagues, so we can ensure that the recipients are properly targeted. Because this is the congress location, we wanted to help people living around it.

NU Care-Lazisnu also distributed 1,000 free lunch boxes through its “Friday Sharing” program. Volunteers delivered the meals at four locations, including mosques used by congress participants for Friday prayers.

I plan to use this to prepare for entering secondary school, to buy a bag, clothes and other school supplies. I am happy to receive this assistance. May it bring blessings.

Riri Khariroh, the organization’s executive director, said the social work reflected NU’s role in serving the public, especially people who need help. She said the congress should be understood not only as a forum to choose new leaders, but also as a gathering that demonstrated solidarity and concern for humanitarian issues.

Since our office has, so to speak, moved here to Jombang, we have also brought the services we usually provide here. The aim is to share happiness and joy with all the congress participants.
