Oman’s standards and specifications index rises 33.8%

Oman’s Standards and Specifications Index grew 33.8% by the end of the second quarter of 2026, exceeding the target for the period by 65% as the country expands its regulatory framework for products and services.

The Directorate General of Standards and Metrology at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion is working under its 2026 plan on around 1,567 unified Gulf standard specifications projects. Oman is preparing approximately 325 of them, alongside 16 national standard specifications projects. Overall completion under the plan passed 80% by the end of the second quarter.

The standards cover food products, building materials, petroleum products, energy efficiency, electricity and electronics. The programme is also moving into newer areas linked to economic transformation, including digital transformation, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, electric vehicles, logistics and tourism.

Emad bin Khamis Al-Shukaili, director general of the standards and metrology directorate, said the expanding system was strengthening Oman’s technical infrastructure and setting clearer requirements for quality, safety and efficiency. He said standardisation helps Omani products meet technical requirements in domestic and international markets, reduces technical barriers to trade and creates a clearer regulatory environment for producers and investors.

In digital transformation, Oman has prepared Gulf standards projects on environmental sustainability in artificial intelligence systems, data quality for analytics and machine learning, and terrestrial audio radio broadcast receivers. Energy-related specifications cover wind-power generation systems, asset management and extending the operating life of energy infrastructure. Other standards address facility performance management, cold-chain logistics, product storage and transportation, and environmental guidelines for accommodation facilities.
