BlaBlaCar, a ride-sharing platform that was once a revolutionary and highly popular choice for students and budget travelers in Croatia, appears to be losing its appeal. What was once a go-to for faster and cheaper alternatives to buses is now facing a significant drop in users, prompting questions about its future.

A Reddit user initiated a discussion, noting that a route previously filled with passengers for around 10 euros now struggles to attract anyone. The primary reason cited by numerous users for the decline is the price. Many feel that BlaBlaCar is no longer significantly cheaper than buses, especially with the emergence of low-cost bus carriers. "Why should I travel with someone for the same price when I can take a bus, which has infinitely more departures?" one user questioned, adding that bus travel offers the convenience of using headphones and sleeping without feeling rude.

Drivers, however, argue that rising fuel and toll costs mean the maximum price allowed by the app barely covers travel expenses, let alone car depreciation. The introduction of a service fee of about 20% for passengers further increased the cost, even if drivers maintained their original prices. Beyond cost, users also expressed frustration with the logistics of coordinating pick-up and drop-off points, particularly in large cities where drivers often insist on locations inconvenient for passengers. The perceived lack of flexibility, with drivers posting rides last minute, contrasts sharply with the ability to book bus tickets weeks in advance.

Safety concerns, especially for women, have also emerged as a significant factor. Some users noted that women are hesitant to share a car with a male driver, and one user confirmed she always chooses a female driver if possible, describing a past uncomfortable experience. The social aspect also plays a role; while some have met interesting people, others find the forced conversations and introductions tiresome. For many, the quiet anonymity of a bus journey now seems more valuable than the few euros saved on BlaBlaCar.
