Over 100 Searches at Romania's Northern Border in Contraband and Corruption Probe

Romanian border police and customs officials are at the center of a major anti-contraband and anti-corruption operation, with over 100 searches conducted across key northern border points. The investigation, coordinated by the Organized Crime Combat Brigade Suceava, involves significant numbers of both border police and customs officers, highlighting the pervasive nature of illicit activities at the frontier.

In the aftermath of the house searches, a total of 3,457 packs of cigarettes and 240 loose cigarettes (unpacked) were discovered in a wooded area behind a house, covered with vegetation, as well as inside the furniture in another house.

The operation, which includes searches at Siret, Vicovu de Sus in Suceava county, and Racovăț in Botoșani county, aims to dismantle smuggling networks that have been operating with the alleged complicity of law enforcement personnel. The seizure of thousands of cigarette packs and other illicit goods underscores the scale of the problem.

This crackdown is not an isolated incident. A separate operation in Maramureș resulted in the detention of six individuals and the confiscation of nearly 7,000 packs of contraband cigarettes, valued at over 134,000 lei. The authorities also seized vehicles and froze bank accounts, signaling a serious effort to disrupt these criminal enterprises.

Border police also seized various sums of money (300 euros and 2,000 lei), a night vision device with thermal imaging, binoculars, 12 mobile phones, 10 SIM cards, and 4 radio transceivers.
