Paraguay's President Arrives in Peru for Fujimori's Inauguration

Paraguay's President Santiago Peña arrived in Peru on Monday to attend the official inauguration and transfer of power for President-elect Keiko Fujimori. Peña, accompanied by his wife Leticia Ocampos, landed at a military air base near Lima and was received by the Minister of Environment, Nelly Paredes, along with embassy officials.

The Paraguayan president is scheduled to attend a formal reception and dinner with interim President José María Balcázar, who will officially hand over the presidential sash to Fujimori on Tuesday. Fujimori, the political heir of former President Alberto Fujimori, secured victory in the presidential election on July 3 after a close runoff contest.

President Peña's visit also includes plans for bilateral and business meetings during his stay in Peru. He is part of a significant delegation of regional leaders converging for the inauguration. Other heads of state attending include Argentina's Javier Milei, Bolivia's Rodrigo Paz, Chile's José Antonio Kast, Panama's José Raúl Mulino, Uruguay's Yamandú Orsi, and Ecuador's Daniel Noboa.

Following the events in Peru, President Peña is set to embark on his first official visit to Ecuador on Wednesday. This trip marks his initial state visit to the Andean nation since assuming the presidency of Paraguay in August 2023.
