Spain's King Meets Peru President-Elect, Pledges Stronger Bilateral Ties

Spain's King Felipe VI held a significant meeting with Peru's President-elect Keiko Fujimori in Lima, just a day before her official inauguration. The encounter underscored a mutual commitment to reinforcing the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

According to a statement from Fujimori's office, both leaders reaffirmed the existing ties of friendship and pledged to enhance bilateral cooperation for the mutual benefit of Peru and Spain. The Spanish Royal Household also shared images of the meeting, which took place at the Palacio de Torre Tagle, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in the historic center of Lima.

King Felipe VI arrived in Lima earlier that day and was formally received by Peru's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Pareja, and the Peruvian Ambassador to Spain, Alejandro Abellán García de Diego. This visit marks the second time the Spanish monarch has attended a presidential inauguration in Peru since he became king, having previously attended Pedro Castillo's inauguration five years prior.

Fujimori's election victory, secured by a narrow margin of less than 50,000 votes, signifies the return of the Fujimori political movement to power. This occurs approximately twenty-six years after her father, Alberto Fujimori, resigned amidst a major corruption scandal. He was later convicted on charges including crimes against humanity and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
